YOSEMITE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The most highly trafficked area in Yosemite National Park is also the most likely to experience rockfalls, according to over 150 years of data.
In February, park staff announced they updated their rockfall database, which now spans from 1857 to 2024.
According
to the interactive map, the majority of rockfalls occurred in Yosemite Valley, the most visited area in the park. In September 2017, a man died and his wife was injured after a rockfall on El Capitan. They had travelled from Wales.
More recently, in December 2022, a rockfall just a few miles away killed a married couple from San Jose. It happened near the park's Arch Rock Entrance along Highway 140, the same roadway that was the site of a recent rockslide that blocked traffic to the park for almost two weeks.

While tragedy does occur, the map shows that the majority of the park's rockfalls are not deadly. It also reveals that most of the rockfalls occurred in winter and were induced by some form of precipitation.
