Tick activity expected to rise as weather warms up this spring, prevention tips
Mar 28, 2025
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Tick activity is expected to pick up quickly as the weather continues to warm this spring.
With the weather getting warmer, ticks are remerging the season but there are some ways to prevent you or your furry friends from getting a tick bite.
There are two types of tick
s that are common in the Pioneer Valley: The deer tick and the dog tick. These ticks can be carriers of Lyme disease. Health experts say symptoms include a fever, headache, fatigue, or skin rash.
If it's left untreated, the bacterial infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Although, most cases can be treated with antibiotics if caught early enough.
"If you catch them early, it's easier to get out. And they actually haven't started the feeding process for about 48 to 72 hours. So the earlier you can get them off, the less likely you are to get that disease because they haven't started feeding."
Ticks can commonly be found in tall grassy areas, the woods, or in tall bushes, and they wait there for an animal or person to brush up against it.
If you plan to go to areas where there may be ticks, experts suggest the following:
Dressing in long sleeves and pants
Tucking your pant legs into socks, especially if you will be walking or hiking in tall grass or wooded areas
Wearing a bug repellent to keep ticks away
If you bring your pet along, give them a tick collar
After the walk, check your pet for any ticks and remove any you do find
If you suspect a tick bite, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
