NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Stronger winds move into New Mexico starting Saturday. The highest winds will be next Tuesday, but a high fire danger will develop in parts of New Mexico every day for the next several days.
Temperatures are as much as 15° warmer on Friday in southeast New Mexico, while th
e northwestern part of the state is as much as 15° cooler, thanks to cloud cover and a cold front moving through there. That front is also bringing some gusty winds to far western New Mexico. Cooler air will move into the state through Friday night, bringing high temperatures down over 10° for most of New Mexico on Saturday. It will be windy across the state Saturday afternoon, with westerly wind gusts as high as 45 mph. This will bring a high fire danger across most of the state. Winds will be lighter on Sunday but still breezy. Temperatures will also continue to cool off, back closer to average for most of the state.

The wind isn't going anywhere anytime soon, with more breezy conditions on Monday and even windier weather next Tuesday. This will bring in warmer temperatures, though. Unfortunately, it will again bring a high fire danger, especially on Tuesday. On Tuesday afternoon, westerly winds could gust up to 60 mph, causing areas of blowing sand and dust. Cooler air will move in with a cold front Tuesday night. Winds will also relax starting Wednesday.
Forecast models are coming into better agreement on a storm system late next week that could hopefully bring in widespread chances for rain across New Mexico, especially next Friday. ...read more read less
