Ceremony held at Virginia War Memorial in Richmond for National Vietnam War Veterans Day

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A ceremony was held at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond on Friday in honor of National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

ment of Veterans Affairs.
The ceremony on Friday was held outdoors in the memorial's Shrine of Memory -- 20th Century where the names of Virginia heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving in Vietnam, World War II, Korea and the Persian Gulf are engraved on glass and stone walls.

Following the ceremony, an open mic session took place where veterans who served during the Vietnam War had the opportunity to share their personal stories and experiences serving during the conflict.
Those who had not yet received the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration Commission's special Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin were able to receive their pins during the event.
8News spoke with Walter Allmon, an Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
"This is an annual program that I come to each year, and it's a way of uplifting me," Allmon said. "It's important to me to come to share my story with other veterans who also attend the program."
Allmon said attending the event is a way of expressing comradery with other veterans.
"It's a way for us to be together, and stay together," Allmon said.
An Open House will be held at the Virginia War Memorial from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, with an emphasis on Vietnam War exhibits, films and tours led by Vietnam War veterans.
According to officials, this is the eighth consecutive year that the Commonwealth of Virginia joined others across the nation in observing National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29. ...read more read less
