MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There were memories, hymns and prayers Friday during funeral services are underway Friday for Ricky Floyd, a beloved Frayser pastor who was tragically killed earlier this month in a shooting.
The celebration of life began with a visitation Friday morning at Greater Imani Church
in Memphis.
Hundreds of family, friends, and parishioners who were touched by the teachings of the pastor of Pursuit of God Church remembered a man described as a beloved leader, friend, mentor and true servant to the city.
"He had a brilliance about him. A brilliance out-of-the-box ministry concepts, willing to go where others would not dare to go," said Dr. Bill Adkins, Greater Imani Church pastor.
The 58-year-old was shot to death earlier this month. But it was his life that was celebrated with tributes about his work in the community that reached far beyond his congregation and the Frayser community.
Over the years, Pastor Floyd was known for his work against violence in the community.
"We got to pick up the mantle, y'all," Memphis Mayor Paul Young said. "These young men, these young people in our community, they're crying out for help, and he was right there listening. We have to do the same thing and let's not let his memory be in vain."
