of the Nebraska State Penitentiary property.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue says a vehicle that was stuck caught on fire in the grassy area. Fire crews worked to put out the blaze, but with the windy conditions, the fire started to spread quickly. Access to where the fire was happening was a problem for fire crews to get their rigs in to fight the flames.
Mutual aid from Southwest Rural Fire, Malcolm, Hickman and the Nebraska Air Guard was called in and they brought their grass and brush rigs.

A news release from the Nebraska Department of Corrections to KFOR said as a precautionary measure, the Penitentiary was placed on lockdown for an emergency count. All staff and incarcerated individuals are accounted for, and no injuries were sustained.
LFR public information officer MJ Lierman said in a text to KFOR News and other media the fire is under control and the Nebraska Department of Corrections will be doing fire watch in the area for the next 24 hours. ...read more read less
