Warm this weekend as the severe storm threat looms late Sunday
Mar 28, 2025
It was a nice finish to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky with a surge of warmer air pushing into the region. With a good bit of sunshine and a strong southwest wind, afternoon highs jumped all the way into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees Friday, a good solid 15 to 20 degrees plus
above average for the end of March and just short of record highs for a few locations. It’s definitely feeling more like spring and that will continue into the weekend.
Much warmth is on tap for Saturday as a breezy southwest wind pushes afternoon highs into the mid-70s across the area. With a bit of energy sliding by to our west there is the chance of a few scattered thunderstorms mainly late afternoon, evening and into the overnight but it appears much of the day will be dry. This should make for a pretty good day for outdoor activities but make sure and take the rain gear along.
The main focus continues to be Sunday as a strong storm system moves eastward into the Ohio Valley. This much advertised event is coming into focus a little better as we draw closer and it appears that much of the commonwealth is in line for strong to severe storms Sunday night and into early Monday. The Storm Prediction Center has much of Central Kentucky in a Level 3 severe risk (out of 5) with Eastern Kentucky in a Level 2 threat. All modes of severe weather are on the table, including a few tornadoes so we are looking at a “Weather Impact Day”, especially into Sunday Night.
After some morning showers and storms Sunday, much of the day may end up being dry as afternoon highs climb into the 70s on the heels of a strong southwest wind. Based on the latest data this appears to be an overnight event now, which is always problematic with a legitimate severe weather threat while most folks are asleep. You’ll need to have a way to get weather alerts overnight Sunday and into Monday. A NOAA weather radio is best and make sure cell phones have emergency alerts turned on and are not in silent mode. Of course the ABC 36 Storm Team will be tracking this system through the weekend and monitoring everything closely during that time frame.
Showers and a few storms should linger into Monday morning before we dry out for the final day of March. Afternoon highs will back off into the low 60s, which is right around average to end the month. No April Fools this year with sunshine and pleasant highs expected Tuesday as temperatures top out in the upper 50s. Unfortunately our active weather pattern will stay ramped up as yet another storm system could bring additional strong storm chances late next Wednesday and into Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center has an elevated risk for much of the region in their extended outlook for the middle of next week so that’s something we’ll have to watch as well. Unfortunately this is the beginning of our spring severe weather season so you definitely want to review your safety plan given what may be on the horizon in the coming days. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted!
