Scattered showers for Saturday; a threat for severe storms on Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS -- The day started with scattered showers and storms as a warm front lifted north across the state.
With winds gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour, Indianapolis reached a high temperature of 81° in the afternoon. It's the earliest first 80° day in 13 years for the city. March 28th also
ties for the 8th earliest occurrence on record. The earliest first 80° ever was March 8, 1974. If you are heading to the Sweet Sixteen games tonight, temperatures will be in the 70s by 7 p.m. By the time the Purdue game tips off, temperatures will be in the mid-60s with partly cloudy skies.
Our weather pattern will be more unsettled over the weekend. Saturday will start dry with another chance for showers arriving in the afternoon. Expect gusty winds of 20 to 30 mph from the south, with highs near 70°. The rain will continue through Sunday morning before ending.
Sunday will be a sunny, mild day with gusty winds from the south. As a cold front approaches, rain and thunderstorms will develop Sunday afternoon and continue through the evening. Severe storms, with all modes of severe weather, will be likely. The exact timing and strength of the storms are still to be determined, but lightning, damaging winds and heavy rain are likely. March has been an active month for stormy weather. We've had 15 days with wind gusts of 40 miles per hour or more. We average two tornadoes during March. So far this month, 15 tornadoes have touched down and caused damage across the state.
