INDIANAPOLIS -- An investigation is underway after police shot a suspect they believe killed one man and critically injured another on the east side of Indianapolis Friday afternoon.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that officers were involved in a shooting
at the 1300 block of Riley Place after being called to the area shortly after 3 p.m. This happened near the intersection of Prospect Street and Emerson Avenue.
IMPD Public Information Officer Drew Brown said that officers arrived on the scene and found one adult male with gunshot wounds inside a residence in the area. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
While on the scene, officers encountered an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds outside the same residence. He was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment, Brown said. As of this article's publication, he remains in critical condition.
Brown said officers learned that a possible suspect was active in the area. Preliminary information indicated they were armed, according to Brown.
A short time later, police confronted the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred. IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said officers on the scene instructed the suspect to put their arms in the air and comply with police.
Bailey said the suspect allegedly ignored these instructions and reached for a handgun in his pocket, according to Bailey. An officer-involved shooting reportedly occurred at the moment. IMPD said detectives recovered a firearm on the scene.
Body-worn camera footage shows the alleged suspect appear to point a firearm in the direction of the officer, IMPD said.
Bailey confirmed that one officer fired their department-issued firearm at the suspect during the encounter.
"You know, it's a beautiful day. And to have this community's peace and safety shattered by the actions of an individual who thought the best way to handle whatever was occurring at that moment in their life was with a handgun is unacceptable in this community and any community in our city," Bailey said.

No officers were injured during the encounter.
IMPD said the intersection of Prospect Street and Emerson Avenue would remain closed for several hours as detectives continue canvassing the scene for evidence.
Motorists passing through the area are encouraged to seek an alternative route, as a large police presence will be there for several hours.
IMPD Internal Affairs has opened a separate investigation into the police shooting. The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure whenever an officer-involved shooting investigation is underway.
Officers were equipped with body-worn cameras that were activated during the incident.
