INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man is in jail accused of reckless homicide following a fatal overdose that took place nearly three years ago.
The suspect was arrested this week for the reckless homicide warrant following a traffic stop along I-74.
At the time of his arrest, police say the sus
pect had cocaine in his possession. That led to a drug possession case being filed in addition to the fatal overdose.

In April 2022, at a home on Indy's near east side near Sherman and East Market Street, Joseph Handlon was found dead in an upstairs hallway following an overdose of meth, fentanyl and cocaine.
Nearly three years later, 41-year-old Nikolai Alfimow is now accused of being responsible for that death.

"We don't give up on any case or any family that lost someone from a fentanyl poisoning. Although this case happened almost three years ago, we're going to continue to hold people who put poison on our streets accountable," said DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Mike Gannon.
Although court records claim Alfimow repeatedly denied supplying the victim with drugs, prosecutors did recover some incriminating text messages. That included one text where the suspect allegedly wrote, "Got any Zannys… my buddy dad just died."
Police believe the suspect was trying to secure Xanax pills for Handlon, who was upset at the time because his father had recently passed away.

While reckless homicide carries a much lower punishment in Indiana courts compared to a dealing resulting in death charge, investigators said every case comes with unique challenges.
"When we're working cases that are older, you don't always have certain witnesses or evidence, so at the end of the day, we have to charge what we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt," said Gannon.
Regardless of the charges filed in the case, Handlon's death was one of more than 800 fatal overdoses in Marion County in 2022.
Although those numbers have come down in the last couple of years, the message for drug dealers and drug users alike remains the same.
"We’re not always going to be able to make a case, and that’s heart wrenching for us and for the family that lost a loved one, but we want people to know we don’t give up on cases just because they’re challenging. We do our very best," said Gannon.
The case was investigated by the Overdose Death Task Force which involves IMPD, the DEA, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office and the Marion County Coroner's Office.
The suspect is temporarily being held without bond on the drug possession charge pending an initial hearing next week.
