One man taken to hospital after police shooting near Prospect and Emerson
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a police shooting on the city’s southeast side.
Just after 3 p.m. Friday, IMPD Southeast District officers were dispatched to t
he 1300 block of Riley Place near the intersection of Prospect Street and South Emerson Avenue. That is a residential area on the city’s southeast side.
Officers arrived to the scene and found an unidentified adult with gunshot wound injuries inside a residence. This person was pronounced dead at the scene.
While on the scene, officers found an adult male outside the residence with gunshot wound injuries. This man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
While officers were in the 1300 block of Riley Place, they learned an armed suspect was in the area. An officer arrived to the intersection of Prospect Street and South Emerson Avenue, where they encountered the armed suspect.
The officer approached the suspect and said, “Show me your hands! Get your hands out of your pocket!” The officer saw the suspect raise a firearm in the direction of the officer. The officer shot the suspect. The suspect’s firearm was recovered from the scene.
Investigators later confirmed that the armed suspect is in stable condition.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and said there is no threat to the community. IMPD confirmed no officers were injured in the shooting. Investigators say the area will be closed for the next few hours.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct a criminal investigation. A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for a police shooting investigation.
