Muslim community hosts Eid celebration
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The end of Ramadan is just a few days away. The Muslim community in Indianapolis is ready for a historic celebration as they come together for a grand prayer.
For Muslims across Indianapolis, the holiday isn’t just a celebration
, it’s a time for unity and giving back. This year, the community is hosting one of the largest Eid prayers the city has ever seen.
“We have this year decided that many mosques, about eight of them, have decided that they will be renting the convention center, which has already been done, and we expect about 10,000 people to attend that prayer on Sunday,” said Basharat Saleem, executive director of The Islamic Society of North America.
Eid al-Fitr, also known as the “festival of breaking the fast,” marks the end of Ramadan.
“It keeps us pretty engaged throughout the month, and we fast all day long and we do extra prayers in this month,” Saleem says. “So, that’s what Ramadan is all about.”
On Sunday, multiple Islamic centers and mosques across the city are joining forces to host a united prayer at the Indiana Convention Center. The event will also include food and accommodations for people of all abilities.“Eid is basically the first day of Shawwal, which is basically the 10th month of the Islamic calendar,” Saleem says. “That’s a day of celebration for Muslims, it’s the end of Ramadan. We celebrate, we are not fast that day, and we are coming together for a congregational prayer in the morning.”
As Saleem sees it, the event is also an opportunity for people of all faiths to come together.
“It’s a free event,” Saleem says. “Everybody is welcome to attend. Muslims will be coming together and we’ll have a morning prayer, followed by a short sermon and then celebrations. So, everyone will come together as a community.”
The Eid prayer starts at 10 a.m. Sunday.
