President Trump commissions new task force to fight crime in DC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now)-- President Donald Trump has commissioned a new task force to clean up crime in D.C. through an executive order signed Thursday night.
The "DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force" essentially provides a way for the president to have federal oversight of D.C.’s Metro police d
epartment.Trump has repeatedly ridiculed the District for having high crime and what he calls failed policies.

The task force is charged with increasing the number of police officers in public spaces, maximizing immigration enforcement, and expediting concealed carry licenses for “law-abiding citizens.”Trump has been vocally critical of crime being near “historic highs” in D.C. despite data from the Metropolitan Police Department showing that violent crime in the District actually dropped 35% last year.
The executive order also calls for beautifying the nation's capital by restoring federal buildings, parks, and roadways. It also calls for clearing homeless encampments in D.C., but made no mention of any alternative for those who are unhoused.

D.C. resident Carole Al-Kahouahai told DC News Now she thinks a more collaborative approach to fighting crime in DC would be a better approach.
“It would be better if it was collaboration because there has to be some knowledge of the city and knowledge of the efforts that have already been made, and then also talking to the citizens to find out what their priorities are,” said Al-Kahouahai.
