Young: Signal leak a problem but still support Trump’s team

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Sen. Todd Young said he’s confident President Donald Trump will take steps to prevent a repeat of an air strike plan being leaked on the Signal app.
This week, The Atlantic revealed editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was accidentally added to a group chat on the Signal
app concerning planned air strikes in Yemen. The chat was organized by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and included posts from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth detailing the timing of when the strikes would launch.
In an interview with News 8 for All INdiana Politics, Young said he received both an open and a classified briefing on the incident as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. He said communicating war plans on Signal should not happen again and parameters should eb in place to prevent it.
“It suggests that all of us in this age of cell phones and social media should be very careful, should be very careful when we’re not on secure lines, that is government lines in secure facilities, ideally,” he said. “And we should also only be communicating with people on a need-to-know basis.”
Democrats in Congress have called on Hegseth and Waltz to resign. Young said he’s still confident in President Donald Trump’s national security team, particularly Waltz, who he knows from their time serving together in Congress. Young said Waltz’s input has led to a stronger deterrence strategy in the Middle East.
Young published two op-eds this month calling for a national economic security strategy. He told News 8 China, in particular, is waging economic warfare against the United States but America’s response historically has been an “incoherent” mix of sanctions and other trade policies. He said national leaders need to fashion a strategy from past responses that have proven successful. Young said Indiana’s strong manufacturing sector means it can help harden America’s supply chains as well has help develop products the defense sector needs.
In his speech to Congress last month, President Trump called on lawmakers to repeal the CHIPS and Science Act, which Young co-sponsored. Young said he’s talked to Trump about his concerns. He said many of his concerns come down to specific provisions he had to include in order to get the bill past President Joe Biden, such as mandating any contractors under the act provide child care. Young said he plans to work with the Trump administration on tweaks to the law.
News 8 also asked Young about President Trump’s announcement that Boeing, which has faced years of criticism over programs raging from the KC-46 Pegasus tanker and the Starliner spacecraft to the 737-MAX airline, will build the next-generation fighter, dubbed the F-47. Young said Congress will have to do its due diligence to ensure the program does not fall behind schedule or go over budget.
