Officers in Tyre Nichols case back in court ahead of upcoming state trial
Mar 28, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Three of the former Memphis Police Officers accused in the beating death of Tyre Nichols are expected in court on Friday morning.
WREG has covered this case since its beginnings back in January 2023, when Nichols was fatally injured by five police officers following a traffic
stop. He died three days later.
Those officers are Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills, Emmitt Martin, and Justin Smith. Martin and Mills have already entered plea deals, but the other three -- Bean, Haley, and Smith -- are awaiting sentencing on federal charges including witness tampering and civil rights violations.
Ex-officers face separate state trials in Tyre Nichols case
They are also facing state charges of second-degree murder. Their trial date is set for April 28. Today, they are expected in court for a motion hearing ahead of that trial.
Back in October, WREG caught up with Nichols' mother, Rowvaughn Wells, after a jury returned mixed verdicts.
"We're okay for now. We're still waiting for the state trial to see how that's going to come about and hopefully, they'll get more time from that, and then, we can just move on and heal because we really just want to heal right now," said Wells.
