SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – That pitching staff for the Corona baseball team is pretty good.
The Panthers are 10-0 with nine shutouts after a 9-0 win over JSerra on Thursday in the semifinals of the Boras Classic South tournament at JSerra High.
Corona’s only non-shutout this season was a 10-1 win ove
r La Mirada. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 60-1.
Corona will play La Mirada (10-1) in the Boras Classic South championship game Friday at 6 p.m. at JSerra High. La Mirada beat Mater Dei 10-2 in Thursday’s other semifinal.
The Corona-La Mirada winner plays in the Boras Classic California championship game April 26 at the University of San Diego. The Boras South winner will face the winner of the Boras Classic North tournament that will be played April 14-17.
JSerra (5-4 overall) had defeated Cathedral Catholic of San Diego 6-1 and Vista Murrieta 3-2 in the tournament to get to Thursday’s semifinal. JSerra will play Carlsbad on Friday at 3 p.m. at JSerra.
Panthers starter Ethin Bingaman, a senior right-hander, pitched six innings. He allowed three hits, one walk, hit one batter and struck out eight. The Auburn commit is 4-0. He has allowed one earned run in his 20 innings with 33 strikeouts.
Corona center fielder and lead-off batter Anthony Murphy hit a three-run home run, had four RBIs overall and scored three runs. Catcher Josiah Andrade had three of Corona’s 11 hits and scored three runs.
Murphy, who committed to LSU, has had a remarkable two-plus seasons for Corona.
“Every single game he’s been here he’s led off,” said Corona coach Andy Wise. “He’s never come out.”
Corona scored a run in the first inning on a single by Brady Ebel and another in the second on an RBI double by Matthew Herrera.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when the Panthers scored four runs. Murphy’s high-fly home run over the left-field wall drove in Andrade and Herrera.
Murphy’s home run came on a pitch he wanted, and the one he was expecting, from JSerra lefty Colin DiRocco, who was the fourth of JSerra’s six pitchers take the mound Thursday.
“Fastball, up and in,” Murphy said. “He was throwing everybody up and in and that’s what I was looking for.”
A wild pitch sent in the fourth run of the sixth-inning rally.
Corona topped it off with three runs in the seventh inning. Two runs were scored on fielder’s choice ground balls and Murphy had an RBI single.
The Panthers are No. 1 in Prep Baseball Report’s California rankings and No. 1 in the MaxPreps.com national rankings.
Murphy said Wise makes sure the 10-0 start, all of the shutouts and the rankings do not get in the team’s heads.
“He keeps us within ourselves,” Murphy said. “I think that helps us to not get too ‘out there’ and also to not get too down.”
Wise said the players are handling it all very well so far.
“There’s huge expectations individually for everybody,” Wise said. “So we’re just going to do what we do. These guys have so much focus on them.
“What I just talked to the players in the outfield (after the game) about, is how difficult this game is. Just be at your best on every pitch and that’s all we’re concerned about. That’s it.”
