‘It’s scary’: 23andMe bankruptcy sparks data privacy concerns

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Millions of people who have submitted their DNA to 23andMe are now questioning the security of their genetic data after the company announced it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The move has sparked privacy concerns among both users and cybersecurity experts.
“I spit
in a tube and off it went,” said Richmonder Ginny, one of the 15 million customers who used the genetic ancestry service. “I'm adopted, and I was very curious about immigrant stories. I didn't have concerns because I had confidence that that information would be kept confidential.”
When asked if she has concerns now, Ginny's response was simple: “I do.”
The biggest concern, according to University of Richmond professor of analytics and operations Tom Mattson, is the uniqueness of the data 23andMe holds.
"They have ancestry data, they know your great grandfather's surname, they know where he came from, they know all your ethnicities,“ Mattson said. "If somebody wants to target certain people, they have a wonderful profile—wonderful being a dangerous profile—about individuals."
As the company searches for a buyer, the future of its data privacy policies remains uncertain. 23andMe has stated that any potential buyer will be required to comply with the company’s existing privacy policy and applicable laws.
“The challenge is you can abide by the rules and regulations and still do something maybe dangerous with this data,” Mattson said.
Virginia is one of three states with a data protection act, allowing consumers the right to delete their data. However, Mattson pointed out a key limitation.
“The company must have 100,000 customers in the state of Virginia for that to really be applicable. And we don't know whether that's the case,” Mattson said.
