Fire rages through twostory home in northwest Austin
Mar 27, 2025
The Austin Fire Department responded house fire Thursday afternoon in the 400 block of Sixth Place NW that has displaced five people.
AFD was dispatched to a report of the fire at around 2:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon finding both flames and heavy smoke when they arrived. All shifts were paged to batt
le the blaze.
According to Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy there was one adult at home at the time of the fire, who managed to get out of the structure uninjured. He went on to say that four people in total lived at the home — two adults and two children. There was also a visitor to the home.
Throughout the early attack on the blaze, flames could be seen throughout the first floor of the house as well spots upstairs as well. Heavy fire was also observed at the back of the house.
“We were able to access the first floor and got to the second floor, but there was a hole in the floor,” McCoy said, adding that firefighters were also able to gain access to the upstairs through a second-floor window at the front of the house. However, by that point flames had seeped into the attic and McCoy said the decision was made to just control the blaze.
At one point during the fire, the roof of the home had also collapsed, but by around 5:30 p.m., firefighters appeared to have the blaze under control
While no estimate was available as of early Thursday evening, the house has been deemed a total loss. There was also damage to a garage on the east side of the home, as well as a van on the west side of the structure.
There were no injuries.
McCoy said there has been no early determination of what caused the fire and that the State Fire Marshal has been called into investigate.
The Mapleview, Brownsdale and Rose Creek fire departments responded with mutual aid. Mayo Ambulance also responded.
Firefighters were still on scene as of 6 p.m.
It was a busy day for area fighters. McCoy said that AFD firefighters were just wrapping up a dryer fire at Nexus-Gerard Family Healing when the call of the house fire came in.
Later, as firefighters were attempting to put down the house fire, another call came in regarding a fire in a pumpkin patch that had gotten out of control in the 3900 block of Fifth Avenue NW in Austin. Some AFD firefighters broke away for that blaze with mutual aid from Brownsdale, Blooming Prairie and Dexter fire departments.
