Seatbelt violation leads to DUI stop in Merced County

MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A traffic stop for someone not wearing their seatbelt turned into a stop for a DUI in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.
CHP says while patrolling Sante Fe Drive near Franklin Road, an officer noticed a driver not wearing a seatbelt.
The
driver yielded, and CHP says the officer saw the driver reach back and hide two glass bottles behind the seat.
According to CHP, "the smell of alcohol was unmistakable." CHP says that in the passenger seat, a 40oz Miller High Life was sitting on a toolbox, and in the back, there were two more 40oz bottles.
After a DUI evaluation, CHP says the officer had determined the driver had been operating the vehicle under the influence. ...read more read less
