Using five years' worth of crime data, the volunteers created a model to determine the best locations for cameras, how high they should be, and where they should be pointed. "A lot of points of recommendation, there were already some cameras and assets there. That showed 'hey, our algorithm does a good job of being consistent with what the police department has found.' But then our algorithm also found some spots where we didn't already have cameras. And we could say, 'hey, here is a really good recommendation for something that's not already covered," said Aundre Marzulli, Sandia Computer Scientist.
The city has already evaluated Central Ave., and they are now using the model at Coronado and Cottonwood malls. Cameras will be installed in the near future. ...read more read less
