The Spurs try to bounce back after a drubbing from the Pistons as they finish their road trip in Cleveland Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have
a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.
You know there was a period of about 24 hours after the blowout win over the Raptors—capping a three-game win streak—that Spurs fans could feel pretty good about how weelly the team was playing despite missing their two best players and their hall of fame coach. All of that irrational exuberance came crashing to earth on Tuesday as the Pistons left tire tracks all over the Silver and Black as they ran over the Spurs in the Motor City in a 122-96 blowout win that was probably not as close as the final score.
After the Detroit debacle, it doesn’t get any easier, because tonight they face the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs have been dominating the Eastern Conference, and have the league’s longest win streaks of 15 and 16 games. They hit a little bump in the road earlier this month as they lost four games in a row over a six day span*, ending last Friday with a loss to the Suns in Phoenix. Since then, they’ve won two games and seem to be back on track to win the East easily, leading the Celtics by 4.5 games with 10 games to play.
The Cavs have a lot of size, and that’s been the Spurs Kryptonite since Wembanyama has been out. This is a game that might be over midway through the second quarter, but the Spurs can take advantage of opponents that don’t respect the game, and if the Cavs slack off, it could be a good night for Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell and the rest of the Silver and Black gang. Mamukelashvili has already has his breakout game of the year, so maybe tonight is the night that Malaki Branham goes off for 40. Stranger things have happened. Or have they? Anyway, it’s going to be fun to watch, and keep your eyes on the young Spurs. No doubt that Stephon Castle is going to do something amazing tonight, and if you don’t watch, you’ll miss it.
Game Prediction:
In honor of Stephen King, the Cavaliers will change their name to the Cleveland Langoliers starting next year.
* Fun Fact: the Spurs longest losing streak of the year is also four games.
One final word:
GO SPURS GOOOO!!!
