Mikaela Shiffrin closes out season with 101st World Cup victory

The current greatest to ever strap on a pair of skis, Mikaela Shiffrin, ended an injured-disrupted season Thursday with her 101st World Cup victory. Shiffrin raced through the finish line at the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley, Idaho, winning the slalom title.Shiffrin’s combined finish time was 1:4
5.92, over a second quicker than second place Lena Duerr of Germany. Shiffrin’s first time of 52.05 was by far the fastest of the day, setting the tone for her race. Andreja Slokar of Slovenia rounded out the women’s podium in third. The men also raced their slalom Thursday in Sun Valley, with Timon Haugun of Norway taking home the title. It was a nail biter between Haugun and second place Clement Noel of France, who was beat out by 0.03 seconds.Zrinka Ljutic of Croatia took home the year-end slalom title for the women, and Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway, the men’s. Shiffrin, the two-time defending slalom Crystal Globe winner, finished in fourth. Shiffrin’s abdominal injury suffered in late-November caused her to miss action in all of December and most of January.Shiffrin, 30, will look to return to the top of the sport and remain injury free next season. She was last the overall Globe winner in 2023, often racing all four alpine events. Shiffrin is still working toward a giant slalom return after her November crash in the event, now suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder related to skiing the discipline.Shiffrin will also look to make a triumphant return to the Olympics, which would be her fourth, in February. She won slalom and giant slalom gold in Sochi and PyeongChang, respectively, before going medal-less in 2022 in Beijing.Thursday’s races conclude four days of action at the World Cup finals in Sun Valley.
