Colorado's oldest chairlift will retire at the end of the ski season
Mar 27, 2025
DENVER (KDVR) — It's the end of an era for one historic chairlift that's been running for almost 70 years. Sunlight Mountain Resort said Segundo, Colorado's oldest operational chairlift, will be taken down at the end of the season in April.
Segundo's chairlift legacy started in Aspen in 1954, t
aking skiers and boarders up the mountain. The resort said the lift stayed in Aspen until 1969, then it moved to Sunlight in 1973 and has been running for over 50 years.
Here’s when Colorado ski areas close for the 2025 season
Sunlight Mountain Resort said it's going through a "significant upgrade to its infrastructure" and decided to replace the lift with a triple chairlift at the end of the season. Now, Segundo is wrapping up its final days as a running lift.
"For over five decades, Segundo has faithfully transported skiers and snowboarders to the west side of the mountain. This upgraded lift will enhance the skiing experience while honoring the legacy of a piece of Colorado history," the resort said in a press release.
That's not the only iconic lift retiring this year. The resort said it's going through its largest investment in history and will also be replacing the Primo Lift after the resort closes for the season on April 6.
Primo is a fixed-grip double chair that's known as the main route to the top of the mountain, but after this season, it's being replaced with a quad lift to increase lift capacity and shorten lines. While the resort said the Primo Lift is still pending final approval with the forest service, it plans on replacing the lift with the latest technology.
The resort said it plans on completing both projects by the fall of 2025, leaving the lifts ready for the next ski season. The removal and installation will start this summer, closing some summer activities like disc golf, but the mountain will remain open for committed events like weddings.
Winter storm leaves several ski areas with over 200 inches for the season
While Segundo and Primo will only be open for about another week, there's still time to ride the iconic lifts. The resort said it's hosting Segundo Day on Friday, March 28, where skiers and snowboarders can squeeze in some final runs on the lifts.
The resort is celebrating Segundo by running it all day long, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tercero and Primo will also be running on their normal schedules from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The resort will also have live music at 4 p.m. and is hosting a drawing for a chance to win a free pair of skis or a snowboard.
These will be some of the last days for the lifts until they move into retirement. The resort said it's still working on plans for what to do with the two iconic lifts, and plans for their new homes will be announced soon. ...read more read less
