Federal fire restrictions in effect for South Carolina forests

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) -- The U.S. Forest Service has issued new outdoor burning restrictions as dry conditions and gusty winds continue to fuel wildfires across the state.
A closure on all fire-related activity in the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests went into effect on March 26 and wi
ll continue until further notice, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Officials said the use of campfires, open charcoal grills, fireworks, and other pyrotechnic devices are prohibited forestwide.

The federal restrictions are separate from a statewide burning ban issued on March 21 by the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
The statewide order -- which remains active -- prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires, and other recreational fires.
South Carolina is under a state of emergency as wildfires continue to burn in the Upstate and Lowcountry. That includes the massive wildfire at Table Rock in Pickens County, which prompted evacuations of nearby communities. ...read more read less
