Newport police: Providence man stabbed victim multiple times in the back

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport police arrested a Providence man Wednesday night for allegedly stabbing a city man in the back multiple times.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:12 p.m. in the area of 12 Dudley Avenue where officers responded after learning the suspect fled the scene in a 20
04 red Honda CRV with California plates.
Arriving officers found a 35-year-old Newport man with multiple stab wounds in his back, and the victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he is in stable condition.
Officers identified Hezekiah Mendoza, 39, of Providence as the suspect through investigation, and detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mendoza.
Mendoza was located in his parked vehicle by Newport officers patrolling on Wellington Avenue near Kings Park at approximately 3:22 a.m. Thursday.
Mendoza was arrested and transported to the Newport Police Station.
He is charged with assault with intent to commit specified felonies and disorderly conduct and will be arraigned at Newport District Court Thursday.
