KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A Kansas City woman was arrested Thursday after leading Douglas County deputies on a chase through west Lawrence.
Around 12:15 a.m., the sheriff’s office said a deputy tried to pull over a gray Nissan Altima that was speeding on U.S. Highway 59, four miles south of Lawrence
. The driver did not stop, and a chase ensued.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect drove recklessly through streets in west Lawrence and on highways southwest of Lawrence – driving through the yard of a home on Sweetwater Court and into oncoming traffic on the South Lawrence Trafficway.
Officers with the Lawrence Kansas Police Department tried to stop the car by deploying stop sticks to deflate the car's tires.
The chase ultimately ended when a deputy conducted a tactical-vehicle intervention – which is when a law enforcement officer hits the suspect’s car, forcing it spin out and come to a stop. The car came to a stop on eastbound Kansas Highway 10 between the Iowa Street and Haskell Avenue exits.
Deputies arrested the driver, a 39-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman.
Medics checked the driver and a passenger at the scene. A deputy took the passenger to a local hospital to be evaluated.
Deputies took the driver to the Douglas County Jail to be booked on charges of felony fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
The sheriff’s office also said it’s trying to identify a driver that had to swerve off Kansas Highway 10/U.S. 40 during the chase. That person is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 785-841-0007. ...read more read less
