Renovations almost ready at Indianapolis Public Library branch
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Renovations at the Indianapolis Public Library Pike branch are almost done. Library officials will reopen the branch this weekend.
The Pike branch closed in December of 2023 for a $2.2 million renovation pr
oject.
Improvements mostly feature a refreshed look, and updates to facilities. However, they include some significant additions.
Notably, a new Teen Room has plenty of space for students — many being from the nearby Pike Township High School — to check out new books, read and study. It also has a TV and video game consoles.
Pike Branch Manager Michael Jenkins says he hopes the space can provide breaks for the crowds of younger library-goers.
“We figure since they’re one of our largest demographics, we want to accommodate them,” Jenkins said. “That’s why we decided to get the gaming system. That’s why we decided to create a whole space dedicated for them so they can come and feel welcome and have it be inviting for them.”
Library leaders say the new look was designed to also help support early childhood literacy, workforce development and digital connectivity in the neighborhood.
The children’s section features bright colors and improvements to the aquarium, a popular feature among the Pike branch’s visitors.
Chief Public Services Officer John Helling says they’re excited for people of all ages to make connections at the library once again.
“We know that we’re a community hub,” Helling said. “We know people love to come here and just hang out and talk to their neighbors while they look at books.”
Another addition is an audio studio that people can book and receive help to produce their own podcasts.
Jenkins says they’re looking to give people a new platform.
“People can come in and be creative and create some content,” Jenkins said. “We know podcasting is a very popular medium. We do like to try to keep up with what’s popular. It also fits with our goal of free speech and promoting different ideas and people expressing themselves.”
The Pike Branch is located at 6525 Zionsville Rd. Library officials say they will celebrate the reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday.
