(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — We are the Royal Gorge Region, where you might want to think about getting off of Highway 50 to check out Cañon City's Main Street. Although you'll probably get in town on Highway 50, Main Street is the place to be.
Cañon City says many visitors miss it, even though it'
s just one block north of the highway.
"The 400 block of Main Street on the South side dates to the 1870s. Over 150 years now," said Lisa Studts, the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center Museum Director.
Its abundance of turn-of-the-century architecture has it listed on the National Historical Register, but it's many businesses that keep the space vibrant and new.
"As you just walk down the street, just take a look up, and you can see the original architectural features. It looks very similar to what it would look like 100 years ago," said Studts.
Although the city says Main Street road construction is expected to last through April, they hope you'll check out their businesses that come with a beautiful view, and a beloved history.
"Some of the lower levels have changed over time with different businesses and signs, changes in their windows and everything, but everything above is pretty close..." said Studts.
She says a few buildings even have locally mined limestone walls that date back to the early 1860's, and some of their old stone buildings were built using stone that was mined in the prison quarry right down the road.
"The story (with the limestone walls) is that there was a contractor who had got a lot of money from different people to build a number of different structures (in) downtown Cañon City. He built three and then took the money and ran," said Studts.
