Baton Rouge's 225 Theatre Collective fosters community creativity

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The 225 Theatre Collective in Baton Rouge is making a significant impact in the capital city, providing a safe and creative space for local artists.
"The fact that we have this here as an extra outlet to come and perform and do the things we love, I think i
s so, so special," said Hunter Sparacino, a member of the 225 Theatre Collective.
Founded in 2022, the nonprofit provides many creative options. You can try improv, stand-up comedy or take crafting classes.
"We kind of cross paths and we mostly just want to do it for the sake of the community and, you know, our passion for the arts,' said Victoria Brown, co-founder of 225 Theatre Collective.
Stephanie Calero, the nonprofit’s founder, emphasized the organization’s commitment to diversity.
"Our mission is to bring more diversity to the stage so more diversity into the performing arts. I'am Latina, so that is very important to me," she said.
Sparacino joined the art space in 2022. He shared what the nonprofit means to him and urges others to support it.
"It's a constant rotation of events and local shows that we do that keeps things fresh and gives local actors and artists support for what they do, a platform," he said.
Calero and Brown both agree. Baton Rouge’s theatre scene is thriving, but community support is key.
"I think it goes to show that if a big company like TBR can close, it's definitely a hard time for the art community in general. It can happen to anybody. It's definitely a call to action to support your local companies in your local theaters and local artists," said Brown.
Calero wants the community to engage more with the Collective. Everyone is welcome, no matter their experience.
"Whether you're an experienced actor that maybe was at TBR, you know, audition for for stuff here, or if you have never done art at all, anything, come out and try it. What's the worst that can happen, like Victoria said. So we really are a company that welcomes anything and everyone," she said.
"We're always here with open arms for anyone and anybody. You know, we're always taking advice and suggestions for plays and new workshops," said Brown.
