FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — The Fresno County’s District Attorney’s Office announced the county's first-ever jury conviction in a fentanyl murder trial.
24-year-old Cassidy Gonzalez was convicted of second-degree murder for the overdose death of 41-year-old Jade Dreith back in 2022.

“We are the third county in the State of California to secure a conviction for second degree murder of a fentanyl dealer,” Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said. “Our juries are becoming aware of the danger that this drug has puts on people. And when it's sold in its counterfeit form, it really isn't even a drug. It's poison.”
Second-degree murder carries a potential sentencing of 15 years to life.
“It's sending a loud message to people who choose to transport, sell and use this drug that it's serious and there will be consequences in the law for you if you do it,” Smittcamp said.
District Attorney Smittcamp says this conviction was a long time coming. Although Jade's family has justice, she admits there are no victors.
“Both families on both sides are suffering that both families, the family of the defendant, the family of the victim, you know, they're forever changed by this,” Smittcamp said.
Flindt Andersen, the founder of Parents and Addicts in Need, also reacted to the milestone conviction. He says this conviction is good news, because the fentanyl crisis is growing.
“As long as we have a demand for the drug, the supply is going to be there. And so we have to work on the other end of this of getting people the help that they need.” Andersen said.
Now, Andersen says work needs to be done to help addicts.
“Until we address the addiction itself and get help for those people that need it, I think we're still going to be in just kind of in the same mess,” Andersen said.
Gonzales is booked in the Fresno County Jail and is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, April 24. ...read more read less
