GASTONIA, NC – Gaston County Parents are demanding answers about a video making its rounds on social media showing a student assault another student.
The video circulating online shows an incident that happened at Ashbrook High School on Tuesday.
Like hundreds of others, Jessica McMasters paren
t of two Gaston County Schools students saw the video that reportedly involves freshman students on a local Facebook page. The video shows one boy stand up and hit another boy multiple times. You can hear the victim crying while some students laugh.
“This isn’t okay, the community is not going to stand to the side and let like other students become the victim of bullying,” McMasters said. “The child from what we can see was just sitting there was hit aggressively from behind then from side and it’s heartbreaking to hear him cry.”
McMasters’ kids are at a different school, but as a district parent she says it’s still too close to home. She expressed her concerns to the principal of Ashbrook and several other Gaston County Schools officials. She tells WCCB she was unsatisfied with the response.
“It didn’t really answer any of the questions that I had just in regards to what’s being done for the victim, their family, what resources are being provided and what consequences are being had of the aggressor,” McMasters said.
Gaston County Schools policies outline punishment for bullying ranging from in school discipline to suspension, it also says law enforcement may bring criminal charges when appropriate.
In a statement to WCCB, Todd Hagan Gaston County Schools spokesman wrote, “The school is aware of the video that surfaced on social media early [Wednesday] morning. The incident happened yesterday [Tuesday]. The school takes this incident seriously; this type of behavior cannot be tolerated at school. The school investigated the incident, met with the students’ parents, followed its discipline guidelines, and involved the school resource officer/law enforcement. We cannot share/confirm information about the students involved or the disciplinary action taken because of our obligation to student privacy.”
McMasters says her kids have been bullied before and she wants to see the district do more to protect kids.
“I think there needs to be a better support system for children inside the school system, where we came from the guidance counselor rotated classrooms and provided lessons and a since of unity inside the classroom” McMasters said.
WCCB spoke to students off camera who say this is a big topic at school right now. They say most students are saying the video and bullying is not cool and they want to see the aggressor apologize.
