Looking ahead at weather trends for the day of the Bakersfield Marathon
Mar 26, 2025
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Thousands of people will be running at the Kern County Museum, and the million dollar question on everyone's mind is, "What's the weather going to be like during the Bakersfield Marathon?"
Tuesday saw a temperature of 91 degrees, breaking the all-time high record of
90 degrees just before one of Bakersfield's biggest events.
"Everyone's been so worried because this week we saw some of the hottest temperatures we've had since October," said Elaina Rusk, a 17 News meteorologist. "But we're getting a cool down just in time for Sunday."
The high will reach 70 degrees on Sunday, but the start of the race will be much cooler.
"When we first start, I think we'll be at 49 degrees, and then everybody's going out, and peeling off those layers as the miles go on," said Rusk. "We get up into the 60s if you're gonna be one of the later ones passing the finish line, and closer to close at 2 p.m."

Since you know the weather, here are some running tips for the pro and the beginner.
"Well, first of all you have to have good shoes," said Robert Boyles, the track coach at Bakersfield College.
Robert Boyles is a track coach at BC, and founder of the Bakersfield Track Club.
He prefers to train cross country runners on different terrain.
"I prefer Hart Park. I train a lot of cross country and stuff out there," said Boyles. "There's lots of different paths around Hart Park up in through the hills, and you can head out to Ming Lake, go around the lake and come back."
Boyles says if you're a beginner, start off slow. Walk when you need to, and stay hydrated by making frequent pit stops at the water stations.
One more thing, you're gonna be sore.
"You probably are not gonna want to drive. So, make sure you have a ride, and make sure you have some ice ready," said Boyles.
There's a full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 6K, but no matter which one you run we'll see you at the finish line.
