Community comes out in support of Centerburg students

CENTERBURG, Ohio (WCMH) -- What started as a small act of kindness has turned into something much bigger at Centerburg High School.
It started when Karressa Knight noticed her daughter’s lunch money balance running low. After asking her daughter about it, she learned something that warmed her
heart and inspired her to want to make a change.
Knight learned her daughter had been using her lunch money to feed her friends in need at school.

“I was so proud of her for, like, making sure that things just happened,” she said.
Knight reached out to the district and found out that the total student lunch debt at the high school was just under $900.
Knight knew she wanted to do something to help so during the school’s spring break, she started a crowdfunding effort and set the goal at $900. Within 45 minutes of posting it, that goal was met; it is now nearing $2,000.
It is something Knight didn’t expect to happen, but she’s been blown away with the support.
“I couldn't even believe it happened, but, I mean, the Centerburg community is very different,” she said. “Like, it's a small town, it's a farming community, and they're definitely very much so ready to take care of their community at all times, just proves to you that a community can do a lot. It takes a village to raise children.”

Knight says she hopes that this will help provide some relief to families.
“It takes a village to raise children and, you know, as I've been a single mom before, so I've been through the, our accounts are negative, your child can't get lunch, and the schools do what they can but it's not like they can just give the money to the kids and let them go eat lunch,” she said. “That’s not how it works.”
People can donate to the effort through Monday. After that, she’ll collect the money and bring it to the school district. ...read more read less
