March is historically the most active month of the season for auroras. Tonight could be a night that validates that.
G2 conditions are currently in place, a level at which WNY can typically see faint auroras. While there is no telling how long these G2 conditions will last, it's certainly possib
le (if not likely) they'll linger beyond nightfall this evening.
You're going to need to get away from any & all light pollution with a clean view of the northern horizon tonight. No specific time, so long as it's dark. In my experience, G2 will manifest as a milky haze to the naked eye. Even the camera on your smartphone will be enough to bring out the color. Longer exposure cameras will do a significantly better job.
Clouds are a problem as I type this but are expected to gradually clear out deeper into the night. This should offer a more encouraging view in time, we just need the show to linger. I'll be out with the camera tonight & will update Facebook/X if there's something to see! ...read more read less
