'It's time we're holding that trophy': Geneseo hockey set to face Hobart in Frozen Four
Mar 26, 2025
GENESEO, N.Y. (WROC) - After a comeback win over Aurora in the quarterfinals, the Geneseo men's hockey team is back in the Frozen Four of the DIII NCAA Tournament.
Standing in its way on the path to the title game is Hobart, the two-time defending national champion.
The stakes are high as Gen
eseo is looking to reach its first title game since 2022, but the semifinal matchup is also a rivalry.
"A lot of guys on our team know guys on that team, too, so it adds a little bit more to that rivalry," goalie Adam Harris said. "Also knowing that they're back-to-back champions, we really want to end that streak for them, so that adds even more. We're confident in our abilities, so if we just keep doing what we're doing, I think we can get it done."
Of the final four teams in the tournament, three are from New York: Geneseo, Hobart and Utica. Head coach Chris Schultz recognized the impact the New York representation has on the local hockey community.
"With three New York teams in the mix, it's going to be exciting. I think it's great for the college hockey fanbase in the area. All of the teams have great following," he said. "So, it's going to be a time to enjoy and relish, but at the same time, put our work in and hopefully we can win that championship."
Tommy Winn is one of two Rochester natives on Geneseo's roster. Growing up familiar with the city's local college hockey teams, he's ready for his chance to play in the rivalry for the first time in his career.
"It's a matchup that's been on the radar for awhile, two top teams in the nation," Winn said. "I think there is some motivation, especially with them being back-to-back national champions. Obviously, we want to be the team that can take them down, but being close to them and in the same region, there's definitely a little unhinged rivalry."
While this is the Knights' fifth trip to the Frozen Four since the 2013-14 season, they have never won a national championship.
With their trip to the title game just one win away, seniors like Harris and Winn know just how special bringing home the hardware would be.
"It would mean everything. Obviously, our program has been so close so many times that to be the first ones to do it would be really special," Harris said. "I think it would be a big shoutout to all the guys before us that paved the way for us and created such a good organization here. I'd be really happy for them, as well."
Winn also mentioned how the win would be special to those who played in a Knights jersey before him.
"It's something this program has yet to do. It's something we definitely want to do for not only the guys in the locker room with us, but everyone who's come before us," he said.
Coach Schultz has confidence in his team to bring home the trophy that, he believes, is long overdue.
"We've been very blessed here with winning a lot of championships and making a lot of Frozen Fours," Schultz said. "It's time. It's time we're holding that trophy at the end of the year."
Geneseo and Hobart are set to play for a spot in the national championship on Friday, March 28th, at 3 p.m.
