Denver police arrest shooting suspect after standoff in city's Five Points neighborhood

DENVER The Denver Police Department arrested a man allegedly connected to a shooting in the city's Five Points neighborhood following a standoff Monday night. Officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment in the
2300 block of Welton Street around 8:30 p.m. Authorities arrived and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, according to Denver PD. The suspect was identified as Paul Cushinberry, 53. Police said the victim and Cushinberry, who knew each other, got into a verbal altercation, which escalated to the shooting. According to Denver PD, Cushinberry barricaded himself in the apartment once officers arrived. At one point, the department said he fired a shot through the wall at authorities. Cushenberry was eventually arrested for investigation of attempted murder of a peace officer and first-degree assault. The Denver District Attorney's Office will determine the final charges.
