Bernalillo County votes on update to glyphosate policy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County is lifting its ban on the use of a controversial herbicide known as glyphosate commonly found in weed killers like roundup, as weeds grow out of control.
Starting as early as May 1st, Bernalillo County will re-introduce this chemical treatment to r
educe the overgrowth of weeds across the county, while looking for other long-term solutions to weed management.

"We know that glyphosate is a weed killer. We know that it is a toxin, but we also know that if we handle it correctly, if we treat it correctly, and we're careful with the way we apply it, we can mitigate a lot of those risks," said Kali Bronson, Stormwater Program Compliance manager Bernalillo County.
The new resolution extends the moratorium period on glyphosate use in county-maintained areas where other weed-management methods have been implemented.
In 2019, the county banned the use of the herbicide due to health concerns for wildlife and humans, including cancer, but county officials say they weren't able to find an effective replacement for removing the weeds, which has made the problem impossible to keep up with.
The update provides temporary restricted-use exceptions in areas that weeds have become unmanageable.
The county is working to finalize a plan including scientific research, expert recommendations and peer-reviewed practices to guide weed-management decisions. The resolution passed on a vote of 4 to 1. ...read more read less
