City officials expect more than 30,000 fans for March Madness
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Excitement for this weekend’s March Madness games is ramping up, and so is security measures at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The last time Lucas Oil Stadium hosted a basketball game was during the Final Four in 2021
, but that was during COVID and its many restrictions. Now, more than 30,000 fans from Houston, Purdue, Tennessee, and Kentucky will descend onto Indianapolis.
“Like basketball, security is a team sport. We’re asking the community if you see something suspicious, say something,” IMPD spokesperson Tommy Thompson said.
Thompson said there will be an increase of officers around Lucas Oil Stadium. South Street will be closed between Missouri Street and Capitol Avenue. Because of the traffic congestion downtown, IMPD recommends packing your patience and to walk or use public transportation when you can.
If you must drive downtown, Lucas Oil Stadium Director Eric Neuburger recommends booking parking before hand through ParkWhiz. “There is limited on site parking. It’s first come first serve but there’s plenty of other downtown parking,” he said.
Long security lines at the stadium can be a hassle, but there are ways to expedite the process. “I suggest everyone download their tickets before hand so you’re ready to enter the stadium,” Neuburger said.
Regular purses and backpacks are not allowed, as Lucas Oil Stadium has a clear bag policy. But fans with small clutch bags or purses won’t have trouble entering.
Neuburger said fans can get up to date communication and security briefs through the Lucas Oil Stadium social media page.
