WISH-TV seeks MMPP applicants
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)- WISH-TV is investing in the future of journalism through our Multicultural Media Producing Program.
The initiative is designed to bring more diversity to newsrooms across the country. Applications are now open for the semester-long fall progr
am.
The program is more than just a course – it’s an investment in your future. Students learn everything from building a newscast to understanding the fast-paced environment of a newsroom.
Alexis Howell just completed the MMPP program in the fall. Now, she’s a WISH-TV intern and applying what she learned in the program to real-life.
“I work on stacking the show and just making sure all the other little stuff is in there, like telling the anchors where to sit and stand, writing the teases, and stuff like that,” Howell said.
Howell thinks the MMPP program is the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door, especially if you’re curious about how the newsroom works.
“Learning how to write for VOSOTs or VOs and also learning how to make the graphics. We kind of just covered the basics and worked our way up from there,” Howell said.
Executive producer with WISH-TV and news industry veteran Adam Krent leads the program. The curriculum covers the technical side of producing, but also dives into real world demands.
“There’s a big shortage of news producers right now. So far, we’ve had about 60 kids come through the program. We’ve hired several of them, either in part-time or full-time roles here at WISH-TV right out of the program, so they can come in here with no experience,” Krent said.
A lot of writing is involved with producing. Krent teaches the basics of news writing by giving writing assignments and critiques each class. He also shows students how to build a rundown and develop their news judgement, so they know what stories should lead a newscast.
“It’s not just for producers. I’ve had students come in and you get a basic understanding of all jobs here in the newsroom. From reporters to producers to digital writers, we kind of touch on all of it, but the main thing we teach is producing,” Krent said.
Howell enjoys her experience at WISH-TV and aspires to have a successful future in news.
“It would be really cool if I got to keep practicing and learning about this job. I think this could become a career for me in the future,” Howell said.
