While the trend is pro
mising, experts warn that alcohol still poses significant risks.
Nate Moellering, with Allendale Treatment & Fort Wayne Recovery, explains the difference between casual drinking and excessive alcohol use.
Excessive drinking is defined as having 2-3 drinks a day or using alcohol as a coping mechanism for life’s challenges, social anxiety, or other impairments. It also involves making alcohol the focal point of social gatherings.
“Alcohol is the deadliest drug, even though it’s legal,” Moellering said. He added that excessive drinking can lead to physical and mental health issues, and withdrawal symptoms can be deadly without professional help.
Moellering attributes Indiana’s progress to growing alcohol-free initiatives, such as “Dry January” and the rise of restaurants specializing in mocktails, a trend he credits to Gen Z. These shifts may be helping more people reconsider their relationship with alcohol.
However, he cautions that other states may see increases in excessive drinking due to rising economic and social tensions across the country.
For those struggling with alcohol dependence, Moellering emphasized the importance of reaching out for professional support. “It’s not easy to seek help, but alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening,” he said.
