(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department has been awarded a grant that will be used to construct new trails leading to Pulpit Rock.
According to the City, the grant comes from a multi-agency partnership that includes Colorado Parks an
d Wildlife, Great Outdoors Colorado, Colorado Lottery, and the Federal Recreational Trails Program. The funding will support vital improvements within Austin Bluffs Open Space, such as trailhead improvements, trail connectivity, and enhanced wayfinding for visitors.
"Austin Bluffs Open Space is a cherished landmark in our community, offering breathtaking vistas and unique geological features," said David Deitemeyer, Trails, Open Space and Parks senior program administrator. "We greatly appreciate the support from Colorado Parks and Wildlife in making this project a reality, as this investment will enhance access to the popular hiking destination and help preserve the natural beauty of our open spaces for future generations to enjoy."

One of the projects the grant will fund is nearly two and a half miles of multi-use, multi-directional single track trails, including half a mile of "Enlightenment Hiking-Only Trail" a dedicated trail leading to the summit that will incorporate stone steps designed to promote sustainability, reduce maintenance costs, and improve the overall experience.
This brings the City closer to completing the 2018 Austin Bluffs Open Space Master Plan.
The project will also go towards restoring about 4,100 feet of rogue and illegal trails, fund trailhead enhancements in two main parking lots, such as the installation of curb and gutter to better organize and accommodate users, and add informative trailhead kiosks at both parking areas. ...read more read less
