Finalist chosen to document Red River district's history
Mar 26, 2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Acacia Heritage Consulting business was named as a finalist for the Cultural Currents initiative, according to a news release from the Red River Cultural District (RRCD).
Cultural Currents is a "strategic partnership" between three nonprofit organizations — the Red River C
ultural District, Downtown Austin Alliance and Preservation Austin, the release said. The initiative helps to tell the history of the Red River Cultural District.
Cultural Currents is a project "meant to highlight the contributions of diverse cultures, communities, and artists who shaped Red River Cultural District's identity." According to RRCD, that will include "German immigrants, Mexican Americans, and early Black Texans."
The project will focus on music and artistic traditions, dedicated to "the years of history of Red River as a center for music and entertainment."
"Founded in 2019, Acacia is a women-owned small business headquartered in Austin that delivers well-researched cultural studies designed for regulatory review and management under local, state, and federal preservation statutes, with expertise in heritage preservation planning and sustainability for economic developments," RRCD said in the release.
The nonprofit said Acacia will assemble a team to help interpret the history of the city, along with local music history, communications, stakeholder engagement and documentary filmmaking.
“We’ve assembled a team with diverse but complementary skill sets who bring expertise in interpretive storytelling not just related to Red River’s nineteenth and early twentieth century history, but also the district’s vibrant artistic legacy through the 1990s. We couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity to foreground Red River’s heritage and history as part of downtown Austin’s larger cultural storytelling,” Acacia Heritage Consulting’s Principal Rachel Feit said in the release.
Acacia plans to team with Limbacher & Godfrey, as well as API Productions, for the project, according to RRCD.
"A major goal for this Cultural Currents effort will include the creation of an interactive storymap highlighting the key places and stories that have come to define the Red River Cultural District over the past 100+ years while accompanied by a multi-step plan that outlines pathways for future storytelling, all of which will remain informed by stakeholder engagement, community feedback, and authentic conversation," RRCD said in the release.
