AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) - Drivers in the Amarillo area may be accustomed to traffic on the city's major thoroughfares of I-40 and I-27, as well as sharing the road with motorcyclists amid the warming weather. However, recent drivers on I-40 in Amarillo were startled to see another addition t o the throng of motorists: A man in shorts, sneakers and a t-shirt traveling on a scooter in the center lane. The viewer submitted a video to MyHighPlains.com showing the scooter driver traveling westbound on I-40, past the Washington Street and Bell Street exits, while traveling at speeds around 60-65 miles per hour. While there may not be many specific laws in Texas for operating "an actual scooter" with a motor, they would generally fall under the same regulations as mopeds or electric bicycles. According to the Texas Transportation Code, a motor-assisted scooter may only be operated on a street or highway where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less. A person may also operate a motor-assisted scooter on a path set aside for bicycles or on a sidewalk. For motorcyclists, helmets are also required for all riders in Texas under the age of 21, as well as those who have not completed a safety course or have no medical insurance.
