The UMD Office of the President reflected on the decision in a statement on the school's website.
"A home economics major with an eye for innovation, Henson created Kermit using one of his mother’s coats and a ping-pong ball cut in half. From those humble beginnings, Kermit has gone on to become one of the world’s most beloved and enduring cultural icons—all while sharing a message of optimism and believing in yourself."
The spring commencement ceremony will take place at SECU Stadium on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 6 p.m.
Individual school and college ceremonies will be held from May 20 to May 22.
