(NEWS10) — A Drag Story Hour event in Pittsfield was abruptly shut down on Saturday following an bomb threat, according to the Pittsfield Police Department. The event was being held at WANDER Berkshires, a community hub off downtown's North Street. According to officials, Pittsfield police and fire departments, as well as the Massachusetts State Bomg Unit, responded to the location at 34 Depot Street for a reported bomb threat. The building was evacuated and searched, police said. After the investigation, police determined that the threat was false. According to Pittsfield police, the threat appears to have come from outside the U.S. The event, scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., was meant to be an anniversary celebration fundraiser for the Berkshires chapter of Drag Story Hour, an initiative where drag queens read stories and offer other literary and creative programming to kids and teenagers. The night included storytelling, crafts, raffles, dancing and drag queen performances. Lineup announced for 77th annual Albany Tulip Festival Berkshire Pride, Drag Story Hour Berkshires and WANDER Berkshires released a joint statement on Sunday about the incident. The three encouraged the community to donate their time and resources to LGBTQ+ organizations and initiatives. "Although new and continuing threats are made, our joy was not dimmed, and our mission remains unwavering. Attempts to silence or scare us only reveal why our visibility, pride and presence are more crucial than ever," the statement read. "To those who would attempt to sow fear -- know this: you've only strengthened our resolve. Our joy is our resistance. Our love is our power. Our community will continue to rise louder, prouder, and more united."
