Warm temperatures continue across New Mexico this afternoon. Potential rain and thunderstorms are on the way.
The high pressure system that brough very warm temperatures over the past few days has broken down and left the state. While the high pressure may be gone the warm temperatures are not.
Temperatures stay well above seasonably average this afternoon and through Friday. Then a weak cold front will move through northwestern New Mexico marginally dropping temperatures. However, while temperatures will cool off over the weekend they will still remain above seasonably average.
Our next spring storm system is making its way into the state this afternoon. The low is over the Gila National Forest this afternoon. By the end of the week, the low pressure will have passed over southeastern New Mexico. This low pressure system will be bringing chances for rain in southern New Mexico as well as stronger wind gusts.
The spotty rain showers will begin this afternoon and into the evening. The best chances for rain are tonight and Thursday night. However, much of this rain is expected to evaporate before it reaches the ground. The reason is the incredibly dry air in place at the surface. The lack of rainfall will lead to dry thunderstorms. These storms bring strong wind gusts and lightning strikes. The combination could potentially cause a threat of wildfires.
The storm system will move out by the weekend. After the low pressure moves out the cloud cover will stick around through most of the weekend. As will the locally breezy conditions. ...read more read less
