Park City mayor intends to form committee to consider early steps in Winter Olympic planning
Mar 26, 2025
Mayor Nann Worel during the State of the City address on Tuesday evening said she plans to form a committee that will be tasked with considering early steps in City Hall’s preparations for the 2034 Winter Olympics. The mayor did not provide details, but a committee will apparently include unidentif
ied former leaders of Park City. She did not provide a precise timeline nor information about what the group will be asked to produce. There are numerous figures who held key roles during the 2002 Winter Olympic era remaining in the Park City area, including two former mayors. There are ex-members of the organizing committee that put on the Games in 2002, athletes who competed in 2002, businesspeople and residents who could provide input as part of a committee. There are also numerous Park City-area athletes who competed in the Winter Olympics that have been held since 2002 or are training to compete in upcoming Games.Brad Olch served three terms as the mayor, from 1990 until 2002, and left office just weeks before the Games. He was a pivotal figure during the earlier Olympic era since the plans for the Games were crafted while he was in office. Olch also was a member of the leadership board of the organizing committee that put on the Games. Dana Williams succeeded Olch and also served three terms as the mayor. He took office the month before the Games in 2002 and represented the community during the Olympics. Williams led Park City in the period immediately after the Games, as the community began to consider a post-Olympic future. The International Olympic Committee awarded the Games of 2034 to Salt Lake City last summer. The Park City area will have an outsized role, as was the case in 2002. Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort and the Utah Olympic Park are identified as competition venues. The area will also be key to the transportation, security and celebration plans. The awarding of the Games nearly a decade before the event provides more preparation time than leaders had in the earlier Olympic era, when selections of host cities were made approximately seven years in advance.Worel did not outline the steps she wants a committee to address. Some of the work over the past year could provide a preview, though. City Hall, the County Courthouse and the Park City Chamber/Bureau last summer, just after the awarding of the Games, sought a consultant to assist with the crafting of a 10-year plan for the preparations. The parties ultimately did not tap a consultant and instead delayed that aspect of the Olympic work with the hopes of learning about the steps the organizing committee itself was planning to take. The posting that sought a consultant could offer insight into the work that may be upcoming prior to Worel leaving office. Park City, Summit County and the Chamber/Bureau wanted to retain a consultant who would consider a broad range of issues related to the Games. Topics to be addressed included infrastructure, the environment, the economic impact and a roadmap for the implementation of a 10-year plan. The posting last summer envisioned the plan would be submitted to the three parties by the middle of January, more than two months before the mayor’s remarks on Tuesday. The post Park City mayor intends to form committee to consider early steps in Winter Olympic planning appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
