Officials warn of high wildfire risk throughout many Virginia localities
Mar 26, 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Officials throughout Virginia are warning of a high wildfire risk on Wednesday, which comes as a red flag warning is in effect for much of the Commonwealth.
According to the National Weather Service, a red flag warning -- meaning warm temperatures, low humidity and stronger
winds have combined for an increased risk of fire danger -- is in effect for many areas in southwest Virginia on Wednesday, March 26.
The Virginia Department of Forestry has advised residents and visitors to avoid starting outdoor fires on Wednesday.
A temporary burn ban was issued for Henrico County on Wednesday by the Henrico County Division of Fire, which prohibits open-air burning of yard waste, agricultural burns and recreational fires. The ban is expected to be lifted on Friday, March 28 if conditions don't improve.
With this in mind, Chesterfield County Fire and EMS has reminded residents to properly dispose of items like cigarettes to avoid an accidental fire.
In addition, Albemarle County released the following reminders:
It's never okay to burn trash.
Don't add gasoline, lighter fluid, diesel, or the like to a fire.
Don’t leave a fire burning unattended.
Do not leave children or pets alone with open flames.
Always have at least a hose, bucket of water, or shovel with dirt or sand to extinguish flames.
