CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins gave Savong Sam a citation of recognition Wednesday morning to thank him for finding the a missing city woman Sunday.
“We are so proud of how you responded for a time of need in our city,” said Mayor Hopkins.
“You saved Linda’s life.”
Savong was the person who found Linda DeLomba, 45-year-old nonverbal autistic woman who was missing for five days.
“I was always taught to do the right thing no matter who is watching,” said Sam.
“I try to teach my kids the same thing everyday.”
Savong has lived in Cranston since a young age, now working for the Cranston fire department as a mechanic.
He was working on a car when he found DeLomba curled up in the back seat Sunday.
“I thought it was a little boy playing hide and seek, I joke around it was the missing lady everyone is looking for,” said Sam.
Realizing he was right, Sam called the police.
DeLomba ‘s caregiver Roberta Gerard appeared in court Monday, facing multiple charges including abuse and exploitation of an adult with severe impairment.
Her bail was set at $5,000.
Mayor Hopkins is now on a mission to get a bill passed called the “Linda Alert.”
“We don’t have anything in the state that would help us to find somebody like that,” said Mayor Hopkins.
Police said the investigation has now been turned over to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office.
ABC6 has been told Linda is doing well and is back at home after being checked out at a local hospital.
