Newport police respond to overnight car crash with serious injuries

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport Police Department officers responded to a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Ocean Drive and Hazard Road early Wednesday morning, according to the department.
Police responded to reports of screeching tires and a loud crash at approximately 12:43 a.m., find
ing a Toyota Corolla against a tree with substantial front-end damage and both airbags deployed.
The 39-year-old male passenger from Taunton was outside of the vehicle, and the driver, a 29-year-old woman from Fall River was unconscious and trapped inside.
Both individuals were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred.
Newport and Middletown fire personnel responded to the crash and extricated the driver from the vehicle.
She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of severe injuries to her legs and pelvic bone and remains unconscious and in critical condition.
The passenger is also being treated at Rhode Island Hospital with upper body injuries and is in stable condition.
The crash remains under investigation by authorities.
